Dear Friends,
I hope that my message finds you and your families healthy and safe. Over the past few tumultuous weeks, my heart has been heavy with the rapidly changing news, and the sacrifices and decisions we have all had to make in an effort to keep our loved ones, campus, and communities as healthy and safe as possible. Like many of you, I, too, am worried. I feel the ebb and flow of uncertainty under our current conditions.
Like each of you, MCLA has needed to change what “normal” looks like due to the unprecedented effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. Our students will resume classes online March 30th, and our faculty and staff have spent the last two weeks working to make the transition as smooth as possible. We have already begun disbursing emergency money and equipment to at-risk students and will also continue to pay students who held on-campus jobs through the end of the semester as many rely on those funds for basic needs.
During this time of uncertainty and great upheaval, many of you have asked how you can help support our students. We want to be sensitive to you and responsive to the unique situations of everyone in the MCLA community, so we have created the MCLA Resiliency Fund, an emergency relief fund ensuring that all currently enrolled students receive the instruction and support they need without worry about the unexpected financial burden a crisis presents.
With over 40% of our undergraduate students being first-generation college students and over 45% receiving Pell Grants, your support of this fund will aid us in providing stability and assistance to students who face great need in our current reality.
As you can imagine, there still remains a great need to support students impacted by unforeseen circumstances such as:
The MCLA Resiliency Fund will allow the College to help ease the immediate needs for our students and ensure we get through this pandemic together. It is moments like these, when our community comes together to help those in need, that truly define what I know is so wonderful about MCLA.
I understand that for some in our community making a contribution is not an option right now. We know the resiliency and determination you are showing is the quintessence of what it means to be a part of the MCLA community and we are proud to call you one of our own. I am grateful to be a part of a community where people think of the greater good in a moment of uncertainty, and I am humbled by all the work so many have contributed toward our collective goal of helping students succeed.
